Benedicts, French toast, pancakes, crepes, yogurt, and more are available all day, every day. Meli has three locations: Greek Town, River North, and Printer’s Row. Every year, participating restaurants in the North Shore offer special dining deals for the whole month of February, except Valentine’s Day. Uncle Mike’s Place, a family-owned diner, is situated in a quiet part of West Town. They serve Filipino-American breakfasts and classic American diner food. Started as a classic diner in 1991, the place evolved after Uncle Mike started serving recipes inspired by his Filipina mother-in-law. Uncle Mike’s Place has since become one of the best places to get Filipino food in Chicago.

The history of Currency Exchange Cafe is in its name. The cafe’s space is repurposed from an actual currency exchange and retains many of the original hand-painted signs and remnants of its former life. Located in Washington Park by the Garfield Green Line station, the cafe strives to reflect the local culinary character of its neighborhood, serving a variety of Southern Soul and Mexican food. Currency Exchange Cafe is part of the Washington Park Arts Block, a collaboration with the University of Chicago aimed to engage local residents in art, entertainment, and education. The Arts Block also includes BING Art Books, the Arts Incubator, and the proposed Green Line Arts Center.

What a year it’s been! Lots of questionable and unfortunate things have happened in 2016, but Chicago’s food scene has continued to truck on (pun intended). I’ve been very grateful to be able to explore in greater depth the amazing food that Chicago has to offer, starting with Instagram back in spring and being so lucky to join the Fab Food Chicago team this past October. It’s always hard to make a list of the best things I’ve eaten, so I’ve decided to do a “Top 5 Food Trucks” list to narrow down my options.

The Duck Inn is a casual, neighborhood spot located in Bridgeport. Partner/Chef Kevin Hickey is a Bridgeport native and has deep roots to the neighborhood and community. Not only has his family lived in the neighborhood for many generations, but the family he bought the former Gem-Bar space from, also lived there for many years.
