2017 was filled with over-the-top desserts, new and trendy restaurants, and hidden neighborhood gems. Through the opportunities via Fab Food Chicago, I was able to explore Chicago’s dining scene more than I could have ever imagined and grow my personal Instagram account (@topchicagoeats) to where it is today.
Out of all the delicious food I have tried this past year, I have narrowed down the “Top 10 Things I Ate in 2017″…
10. Lemon Pancakes at Kingsbury Street Café
Kingsbury Street Café is tucked away in a quiet area of Lincoln Park. It’s a great spot to grab some mouthwatering breakfast. My fave are the Lemon Pancakes, which are light and fluffy with a tangy lemon flavor. The lemon gave it a citrus zest without overpowering the dish.
9. Roman-Style Pizza at Bonci
Bonci is a new pizzeria that opened in the West Loop and specializes in Roman-style pizza. They serve a variety of pizzas with different toppings, which are cut into horizontal slices. They offer both traditional and unique ingredients so I highly suggest trying a few. In addition to their wide selection of pizza, they also offer suppli.
8. Filipino Breakfast at Uncle Mike’s Place
Uncle Mike’s Place is a low key spot in Ukrainian Village for traditional Filipino breakfast. They serve a variety of authentic Filipino food as well as great breakfast dishes that shouldn’t be missed. My favorite dish is the Tocino and Skirt Steak Breakfast.
7. Jumbo Lump Blue Crab Meat at NaKorn
NaKorn serves upscale but approachable Thai food in the heart of Evanston. Each dish is unique and has fresh and bold flavors. My favorite dish is The Jumbo Lump Blue Crab Meat, which had large pieces of fresh crab over warm Thai rice noodles. There were a lot of different flavors going on but they all complemented each other perfectly.

6. Pastrami Spiced Trout Bagel at Steingold’s of Chicago
Steingold’s of Chicago is a Jewish deli in the North Center neighborhood and specializes in really good bagels, which can be hard to find in Chicago. Having visited NYC multiple times this past year, I’ve been wishing for a good spot for bagels in Chicago. Steingold’s of Chicago is everything I dreamed and hoped for.
FAB TIP: Ravenswood location opening soon.

5. Chicken Wings “65” at Mango Pickle
Mango Pickle, located in Edgewater, is owned by husband and wife team, Nakur Patel and Marisa Paolillo, and focuses on contemporary Indian cuisine. I saw several posts on Instagram saying how delicious Mango Pickle’s Fried Chicken “65” was, so when I saw it on their brunch menu, I knew I had to try it. It was amazing! The crispy fried chicken was seasoned with chili and mango barbecue and practically fell off the bone.

4. Uni Toro Tartare at Kai Zan
I’ve heard many people rant and rave about the sushi at Kai Zan, but never experienced it until recently. WOW, what was I missing out all this time? The sushi was extremely fresh and flavorful. My favorite dish was the Uni Toro Tartare. You mix all the ingredients together and lather it onto strips of nori. It’s so good, we ordered two.

3. Cheeseburger at The Loyalist
Move over Au Cheval, the burger at The Loyalist has been recently named as one of the three best burgers in America by Bon Appétit Magazine. I’m so glad I was able to try it before the secret got out. This is definitely the best burger I’ve ever had thus far. The burger is made with a blend of short rib, chuck, and ground bacon. The dipping sauce they serve with the fries is also addicting.

2. Tiradito at Tanta
One of my all time favorite restaurants is Tanta, a Peruvian restaurant. All their dishes highlight authentic Peruvian flavors and pair well with their tasty craft cocktails. They offer a few different options of Tiraditos… their Peruvian take on sashimi.
1. Hon Maguro at Raisu
Raisu opened in 2017 and serves extremely fresh, approachable sushi. Their signature sashimi is the best. At other places, sashimi is simply a thin cut of sliced fish with no other ingredients added. At Raisu, the large cuts of Hon Maguro (bluefin tuna) are topped with sautéed shiitake mushrooms and pickled onions. The toppings were perfectly paired to complement the bluefin tuna.
